Ulpan - Hebrew Language Director

Hebrew College, one of the nation’s leading providers of Jewish education, has a position available for a part-time Director of Ulpan and Hebrew Language for the Department of Community Learning. Located in Newton Centre, Massachusetts, the College provides graduate professional programs and community education programs.
The successful candidate will direct the Ulpan/Hebrew language community programs at Hebrew College. S/he will oversee the scheduling of Ulpan courses, form classes based on student levels each semester, and supervise instructors in the program. Going forward, the Director will initiate new and unique courses in the Ulpan program. In addition, s/he will support the Modern Hebrew courses taught in the academic programs of the college.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Manage the Ulpan/Hebrew language program for the Department of Community Learning at Hebrew College. Responsible for hiring faculty, recruiting students, class scheduling and course placements.
• Oversee the teachers and monitor the quality of their work.
• Guide teachers with regards to Hebrew instruction as well as on how to handle problems that may arise in class.
• Identify and address administrative and educational problems; report them to the Director of Community Learning. Schedule teacher meetings to share their experience and plan a semester of Ulpan activity.
• Speak with the Dean of the Rabbinical/Cantorial School about the Hebrew instruction in this department.
• Evaluate incoming students’ Hebrew levels before they are admitted, and assess students’ Hebrew levels as they progress through the program.
• Think outside the box for to generate new opportunities for teaching Hebrew, and pursue creative ways to grow the program.
• Work with the marketing team to create, design, and market exciting and interesting communications for the community
• Participate as a valued member of the community learning team; attend team meetings and be a positive contributor to a thriving community learning group.
• Manage workload throughout the year, with an emphasis on understanding the cyclical nature of the role.

EDUCATION:

• Teaching certificate required; formal instruction of teaching Hebrew as a second language desirable.
• Experience in teaching Hebrew as a second language on an academic level.

SKILLS:

• Proven success in managing an educational program.
• Experience in teaching Hebrew as a second language on an academic level.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Strong computer skills, including Outlook, Word and Excel.
