Israel: online and in real time
CJP has teamed up with the Israeli American Council to open the Boston Media Room, a real-time online advocacy center where Maya Metser and Rachel Selvin — two of the first participants in 2016 — used social media to positively influence public opinion about Israel.
MAYA: For me, as someone who loves Israel, CJP’s Boston Media Room is an amazing opportunity to support a cause I feel very strongly about. At one point, I felt a little helpless. Now that I’ve joined this project, where I can use my journalism skills and knowledge of Israel to make a difference, I feel like I’ve really found my place.
Quite honestly, collaborating with others who support Israel inspires me. We’re working to shape public opinion in the United States. We want people to understand Israel, fight bias and anti-Israel rhetoric, and hopefully grow our community of activists. We have so many ideas. I’m excited to have a creative platform for my activism and to see what our enthusiastic team can do.
RACHEL: I spent the fall semester in Israel, learning about Jewish history from biblical times to modern day. I realized there’s so much about Israel that’s erased from the media and global narratives. Like all countries, Israel has problems, but it also has many great things to offer.
What I like about the Boston Media Room is that we’re not just combating the negative, we’re also illuminating the positive. As advocates for Israel, we’re using social media to create awareness through compelling messages and infographics. We also suggest actions that people can take to support Israel.
Our goal is to reach people who aren’t educated about Israel or who have only heard one side of the story. A lot of times it’s the mainstream liberal media that’s biased. People might think a story they read is the objective truth, but everything is subjective when it comes to Israel.
