Social Justice (Tzedek)

Through CJP’s Social Justice (Tzedek) initiative, members of our community can act to solve problems that impact both Jewish communities and the broader society. By seeking justice and equity, we put our Jewish values of caring into action. Efforts this year have focused on preventing homelessness and housing insecurity, helping new immigrants find stability, and responding to developing needs in the wake of the pandemic.

COVID-19 RESPONSE SPOTLIGHT

CJP’s Boston Community Welcome Project (BCWP) was launched in 2019 and is based on the collaborative model used to create our Anti-Poverty Initiative. Knowing we can have a greater impact when we coordinate our efforts, CJP convened four major immigration agencies — Jewish Vocational Service, PAIR Project, Jewish Community Relations Council, and Project Citizenship. Together, we are providing a first-of-its-kind centralized intake and warm handoff system to coordinate existing services for immigrants.

During the pandemic, immigrants have faced a dramatic increase in need. Given this, CJP added a fifth partner, Rian Immigrant Center, to the BCWP to focus on legal aid. BCWP’s collaborative model and the partnership among the agencies have been key to achieving outcomes in the two months it operated before COVID-19 and in the months following.
