Ethiopian Jews

Since 1948 more than 90,000 Ethiopian Jews have immigrated to Israel in search of religious freedom. Language, cultural and educational barriers are just some of the challenges they face. CJP’s work with this community began more than fifteen years ago with the creation of Shiluvim, a comprehensive, multi-service program focusing on education, health, empowerment and employment. The success of this program is known throughout Israel and formed the basis of a number of more recent programs that are equally successful.

About Our Work

Through our Netivim Program we are ensuring that more Ethiopian youth enter the Israeli army, have a successful experience, and come out of service with better employment skills and are prepared for successful careers and higher education. The Kurat program provides training that allows Ethiopian adults to go beyond entry level positions, and assists starting entrepreneurs to build successful businesses. Through a variety of multi-cultural programs and events the Ethiopian Jewry Committees in Haifa and Boston promote greater understanding of the Ethiopian community, and increased contact between communities

Focus Areas:

  • Education
  • Family and community empowerment
  • Employment
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Health
  • Preparation for the army
  • Multicultural sensitivity

The result? Effective partnerships with Haifa’s Municipality and federal agencies, community organization and skill-building for the future, greater consciousness about Ethiopian-Israelis and the strengths and energy they bring to Israeli society
