Supporting the Elderly

Together, we’re bringing a measure of certainty to the lives of seniors who are often isolated and unsure if their needs will be met. Through social service programs, housing assistance and compassionate medical care, we’re helping Dnipro's elderly, and supporting social and enrichment opportunities so that they may live their lives with dignity.

Adopt-a-Bubbe/Warm Houses

In partnership with Boston-based Action for Post-Soviet Jewry (APSJ), a key organization in the Soviet Jewry movement, CJP funding supports elderly Jews in Dnipro and in 21 small towns in Ukraine with food parcels, clothing, and medicine, all tailored to the specific needs of the clients.  There are approximately 1,000 Jewish individuals on APSI’s client list who are outside the JDC catchment area. Adopt-a-Bubbe organized a coordinators’ training trip to Dnipro this summer which provided professional guidance for the volunteers working with the elderly population.

Beit Baruch

The only Jewish senior home in the entire FSU, Beit Baruch was established in 2002 and  modeled after Hebrew SeniorLife, with financial support from Boston and professional guidance from JCHE. Residents pay 40-60% of their pension to Beit Baruch; in reality, the amount may only cover as little as 10-40% of the cost of their stay. Currently, there are approximately 50 residents, most of whom need nursing care. The space also is used for rehab.

Shakr Bidrah

Support for seniors’ hip fractures surgery and recovery is available through Shakr Bidrah. At approximately $1500 per patient, CJP’s current allocation covers about 7-10 surgeries a year and helps seniors in need make full recoveries.
